Case Study
In 2007, Pri-Med collaborated with the American Diabetes Association (ADA) to help close the gap between knowledge and patient care. A multi-faceted needs assessment revealed significant gaps in physician competence and performance. To address the need for improvements, Pri-Med and the ADA’s network of diabetes specialists and educators teamed up to design a national curriculum for PCPs who are treating 90% of the more than 20.8 million patients with diabetes today.
The 2007 Pri-Med/ADA educational initiative was comprised of intensive in-depth CME programs with a goal of providing PCPs with the tools to increase screening and identification of risk factors, employ evidence-based treatment management and educate patients on the need to manage diabetes.
More than 2,400 US PCPs took part in the initiative. Six weeks after the program 80% of participants reported to have used the information in their practice. Outcomes data showed improvements in their knowledge and ability to utilize the information to improve patient care. Highlights included:
Knowledge gained
  • More detailed self-assessment of diabetes co-morbid conditions
  • Availability and benefits of new drugs and the advantages of combination therapy
  • Better understanding of diabetes prevention and patient management
Changes in practice performance
  • Modified approach to managing patients through the use of treatment goals and progress tracking.
  • More aggressive with starting, combining and modifying medications.
Despite these improvements, gaps continue to exist in diabetes prevention and care. For example, less than one half of patients with diabetes meet ADA A1C goals (www.cdc.gov). To address this and other challenges, the Pri-Med and ADA utilized the outcomes data and program analysis to develop a phase II curriculum for 2008 to cover in-depth strategies in prevention, diagnosis and treatment, as well as new research, management of complications and treatment of co-morbid conditions. This program is broader in scope with 14 live CME interventions, 12 online activities and 14 newsletters sequentially delivered to the target audience throughout the year. The impact of the curriculum on patient outcomes (level 5) will be measured using patient records accessed through an electronic medical record (EMR) database.
