Merck KGaA's “Fit for 2018” plan calls for thinning employee ranks by 1,100 positions. The company said in a statement that the majority of the job cuts will come through attrition – voluntary resignations and early retirements – and expects that most of the jobs will be gone by the end of 2015. The company said the gradual reduction was part of an agreement between employee and company representatives, and stipulated that active pink-slipping that is part of the company's efficiency strategy will not begin until the end of 2017 at the earliest, not including possible site closures that may occur in the interim.
