J&J pulls morcellator from market

Johnson & Johnson is pulling its power morcellator tool from the market, reports the Star-Ledger. The device is used in hysterectomies and in fibroid removal procedures. Although the device was operating as intended, recent scrutiny indicates that the tool may spread cancers during the process.

J&J's Ethicon division stopped selling the morcellator in April, but is now asking doctors to return them. The Star-Ledger and the Washington Post (via Reuters) say J&J is calling this move a withdrawal, instead of a recall.

Time notes (via the WSJ) that the device is not a major earner for J&J, but it dominates 72% of the market.
