Payment database confounds doctors
The Open Payments website that the public will be able to use to see what pharmaceutical funds are flowing into their doctor's bank accounts has physicians flummoxed. ProPublica reports that doctors are struggling with a time-intensive registration process and are getting the message “there are no results that match the specified search criteria,” which doctors perceive as an error message. The doctors are looking for a message more along the lines of “zero dollars received.”
Doctors need to check their Open Payments profiles because they are allowed to contest information that is wrong or inaccurate. A spokesperson for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, which is overseeing the database, tells ProPublica the “error” message noted is just another way of saying there are no payments to report.
