Study finds heart health knowledge lacking
Heart disease is the leading cause of death, but a Cleveland Clinic survey shows that this really isn't causing many to lose sleep, let alone be aware of their risk factors.
The survey was part of the medical center's “Love Your Heart” consumer education campaign, which revealed major blind spots consumers have about heart health.
Among the findings:
- 70% of adults are not familiar with symptoms associated with heart disease
- 32% of adults are not pursuing any heart-protective measures
- 59% believe heart disease is genetic, though “no such gene has been identified”
- 61% think vitamins and supplements can help hearts, though no studies support this idea
