Study says fat may not be the villain
A report by the New York Times indicates that although a recent study did not find that a high-saturated-fat diet was associated with an increased risk for heart disease, it's not yet time to start dreaming of a cheeseburger-only diet.
“My take on this would be that it's not saturated fat that we should worry about,” lead researcher Rajiv Chowdhury told the Times, which notes his team found that trans fats did damage hearts.
Harvard School of Public Health's Professor Frank Hu told the Times that the study's focus was a little outdated to be useful. This is because it focused on just one micronutrient, as opposed to looking at an individual's overall diet. Therefore, tradeoffs like eating more refined carbohydrates instead of fat, a swap the Times says can be bad for cardiovascular health, were not accounted for.
