John Wiley & Sons joins the dozen or so largest medical publishers with its acquisition of Blackwell Publishing, with scientific and medical titles comprising more than half of its business.
Hoboken, NJ-based Wiley’s scientific, technical and medical division accounts for 38% of the company’s revenues, but joined with Oxford, UK-based Blackwell, whose medical journals accounted for nearly a third of the firm’s business, that figure will soar to 55%.
The £572 million ($1.08 billion) deal, expected to close later this month, will give the firm a combined total of about 1,200 scholarly peer-reviewed journals along with an extensive selection of books.
