The American Medical Association (AMA) adopted a new policy for physician use of using social media. The guidelines, one of the first such codes issued by a major American physician organization, encourage doctors to:
  • refrain from posting identifiable patient information online;
  • when interacting with patients, maintain appropriate boundaries of the patient-physician relationship; and
  • flag “unprofessional” content posted by colleagues and bring it to the attention of the individual, or report it to authorities.
The AMA adopted the code at its semi-annual policy making meeting in San Diego this week.
