Crawford hits the road to hear consumer concerns
Dubbed the "Vision 2006" campaign by the FDA, the series of meetings will take place beginning on Sept. 13 in Miami, followed by a Nov. 2 hearing in Boston and a Nov. 30 session in Phoenix. Each 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. session will include at least 150 consumers, with time devoted to such "hot-button" issues as drug advertising, conflicts of interest among federal advisers and drug safety.
FDA spokeswoman Suzanne Trevino, told The Globe that the meetings will be a chance for Crawford "to shape his leadership and set the tone that we are very interested in what consumers have to say and will be responsive to what they have to say."
Trevino added that public comments would influence FDA actions as the agency celebrates its 100th anniversary next year.
The events borrow from the playbook of David Kessler who held similar exchanges with the public while serving as FDA commissioner from 1990 to 1997.
