The AMA adopted a new policy for physician use of using social media. The guidelines, one of the first such codes issued by a major American physician organization, encourage doctors to: refrain from posting identifiable patient information online; when interacting with patients, maintain appropriate boundaries of the patient-physician relationship; and flag “unprofessional” content posted by colleagues and report it to authorities.

WebMD founder Jeff Arnold has launched Sharecare.com, a website that aims, he said, “to become a trusted resource for accurate, multi-perspective and high quality answers to questions of health.” The site, backed by Discovery Communications and Sony Pictures Television, has lined up Dr. Mehmet Oz (above), of The Dr. Oz Show, to anchor its roster of celebrity contributors.

The AARP and Consumer Reports Health launched an “online drug comparison tool” that uses Consumers Union data to compare drug safety, effectiveness, convenience and price, plus tips on how to talk to their doctor about the drugs. The AARP Drug Savings Tool (drugsavings.aarp.org) covers about 500 drugs in 26 classes and gives “best buy” recommendations.
