Alvaro Alonso, a physician at UMass Memorial Medical Center, won $2,500 for his case video, titled Brainstem Rescue. In the video, Alonso walked viewers through the specific procedures needed to save a cardiac arrest patient, including hypothermia protocol for brainstem injury protection, and the use of a left ventricular assist device, among other procedures.
Alonso's submission was voted on by physicians as part of the National Case Challenge, a QuantiaMD and Journal Watch collaboration. QuantiaMD is an online physician-to-physician learning collaborative, where docs can earn “Q-points” (redeemable for gift cards) by participating on the website.
