A survey of new media use among nurses and physicians found that nurses are highly plugged in to social media, with 65% saying they would engage in social media for reasons of professional development.

Seventy-seven percent of nurses surveyed said they’ve visited Facebook and 11% are using Twitter. That’s about a year behind the general population, said the survey, by Kansas City, MO firm Nicholson Kovac.

“While many feel overburdened by multiple demands on their time, some healthcare professionals are embracing Twitter and other social media channels including blogs,” said Nicholson Kovac president and CEO Pete Kovac. About 83% of nurses access websites for healthcare information, while 41% look specifically at manufacturer sites for info on products and services.

The firm surveyed 292 nurses who completed an online survey in December. Data on physicians were culled from 50 surveys conducted in the same time frame, the company said.
