Epocrates creates drug sampling app for sales forces

Epocrates has launched a mobile drug sampling service to support pharma sales forces.
The Epocrates Mobile Sample Closet offers product samples, starter kits, vouchers, coupons, and patient literature, the firm said, and clients can individualize offers or tailor programs to the company's network of more than 315,000 US physicians as needed.
“Physicians appreciate the ability to conveniently and easily secure drug samples for their patients,” said Rose Crane, president and chief executive officer of Epocrates, in a release. “The Epocrates' mobile drug sample closet provides an excellent service for pharmaceutical companies to complement their sampling strategies and deliver strategic offerings to physicians at the point of care.”
Currently used by AstraZeneca and Forest Labs, the service is being touted as a simple mobile interface that works to enhance sales force sampling efforts, cover vacant sales territories, and reach elusive “low and no-see” physicians.
It's currently available on the iPhone and iPod touch, with an option rolling out soon for Android devices.
According to a report by Manhattan research, 72% of doctors currently own smartphones, and this number is expected to increase to four-fifths of doctors by 2012. One of the primary uses of a physician's mobile device is to look up prescription dug information at the point of patient care.
Epocrates now boasts more than 1.3 million healthcare professionals as members.
