Med Ed Report briefs

The ACCME will host "Fundamentals of Assessment in Medical Education," a workshop on educational measurement, September 17 at its offices in Chicago. Course materials will be available online for those unable to attend.

The Association for Clinical Researchers and Educators, a new group designed to provide "a forum for what we believe is a hitherto silent majority of individuals engaged in clinical service, medical education and medical innovation ready to oppose a small but well-organized and well-funded coterie responsible for an anti-industry movement," held its first meeting July 23 in Boston. The founders include Harvard's Dr. Thomas Stossel and Tom Sullivan of Rockpointe Corp.

A survey of 83 academic CME units found that of the $270 million in annual revenue reported, $145 million came from commercial support, with registration fees contributing another $76 million. Those units spent slightly under $250 million according to the survey, conducted in fall 2008 by SACME and the Association of American Medical Colleges. The average unit conducts 145 yearly activities with commercial support, over one third of which are solely supported by industry funds.
