Case Study
In consultation with Boston University School of Medicine, the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) and Nurse Practitioner Associates for Continuing Education (NPACE), we have developed an integrated series of educational activities designed to improve the ability of primary-care NPs and PAs to screen for common sleep/wake disorders and implement effective management strategies.

Through a series of live meetings and/or web-based teleconferences, primary-care PAs and NPs improved their recognition of sleep/wake disorders and strengthened their therapeutic decision-making for the best care possible for patients.

Another initiative, the irritable bowel syndrome Practice Circles Initiative sponsored by Boston University, helped participants apply what they learned through live meetings and/or web-based teleconferences. The Practice Circle faculty provided diagnostic and treatment plans and procedures to assist them in implementing specific changes and improvements in day-to-day practice, and, importantly, to assess those changes over time.
