Merck in row over AIDS-drug pricing

It was activism that drew the world's attention to the HIV epidemic and to the need for ethical standards in AIDS-drug testing. And activism is once again playing a role, this time in challenging a drug company, Merck, over the price of HIV/AIDS medicine Isentress. The AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), which operates free HIV/AIDS clinics in the US and abroad, this week banned Merck drug reps from calling on staff in its facilities.

People News: Cephalon

Cephalon named CFO Kevin Buchi chief operating officer with responsibility for worldwide pharmaceutical operations, worldwide technical operations, investor relations and business development. Buchi joined Cephalon in 1991 and became CFO in 1996. Replacing him as CFO is Wilco Groenhuysen, who was previously SVP finance.
 

Company News: AstraZeneca

AstraZeneca announced plans to cut 8,000 jobs -- around 12% of its global workforce -- by 2014 as part of a cost-cutting exercise. The firm, which has already eliminated 12,600 jobs in recent years, will lose US market exclusivity on Arimidex and Pulmicort Respules this year and has projected a revenue decline in the mid-single digits for the year. The company will also restructure its R&D function to focus on fewer disease area targets and close some R&D sites.
