MANUFACTURERS Genentech announced the promotions of four VPs to SVP and the appointment of a new VP. The four VPs promoted to SVP include: Markus Gemuend, SVP, biochemical manufacturing; Sean Johnston, SVP and general counsel; Timothy Moore, SVP, global supply chain and John Orwin, SVP, sales and marketing, bio-oncology. Also announced was the appointment of Christopher Horan to VP, planning, distribution and logistics (formerly known as supply chain management). The board of directors of NitroMed has elected Kenneth Bate as CEO. He succeeds Jerry Karabelas, who has served as interim CEO since March 2006. Bate joined NitroMed as CFO and COO, in March 2006. Karabelas will continue to serve as chairman of NitroMed's board. Bate is succeeded as CFO by James Ham, who joined NitroMed in 2004 as VP of finance from Clearview Projects, a consulting firm providing business development and licensing support services to the biotech industry. Over the prior 24-year period, he held various financial and planning positions at Bristol-Myers Squibb. AGENCIES Ogilvy Healthworld added two to its senior creative team. Rich Levy (not to be confused with Rich Levy of CommonHealth’s Ferguson) was named EVP, executive creative director (copy), while Tom Millar becomes EVP, executive creative director (art). Levy joins the company from Verizon Wireless, where he was director, brand and integrated marketing. Millar, who has worked at Draft and Bozell, served as a consultant with Ogilvy on clients MRM and Partisan Communications. Flashpoint Medica, a member of the Omnicom Group, celebrated the return of one of its founding partners, Risa Bernstein, who was forced into an abrupt leave of absence after her son, was seriously injured an accident a year-and-a-half ago. Bernstein is resuming her role as managing partner of the agency, working side-by-side with co-founders Charlene Prounis, Flashpoint's joint managing partner, and Helen Appelbaum, COO. The three women have worked together since 1999, when Prounis and Bernstein helped found Accel, and Appelbaum served as its EVP. Dudnyk has appointed Dr. Christopher Tobias to SVP of scientific and strategic services. In the position, Tobias will expand and lead the new business development efforts of the agency and serve as resident expert for pharmacologic agents, medical devices and diagnostic tests. SUPPLIERS Former Searle, Aventis and Bayer marketer Tig Conger has been appointed partner with the recruiting and consulting firm Heritage Partners International. Conger joined the life sciences recruiting and consulting firm in 2004 following a successful 20 year career in commercial pharmaceutical operations. Most recently he was VP of marketing for Bayer's US pharmaceutical division, where he was responsible for anti-infective and hospital products and previously their cardiovascular products. Conger was director of marketing for cardiovascular and allergy products at Aventis responsible for the development and management of several strategic alliances. Publicis Selling Solutions Group has announced the following new hires and promotions. T. Greg Michael has been hired as SVP, business development. Michael was previously with PDI where he acted as VP and general manager of the AstraZeneca account. Duane Smulling has been hired as senior director, business development. Smulling was previously with PDI where he also in the role of VP and general manager of the AstraZeneca account. Joann Flynn has been hired as business development analyst. Prior, Flynn was founder and president of Designs for Wellness. Fred Ewald has been hired as director, incentive compensation. In his previous position, Ewald was a member of the business analytics group at McNeil Consumer and Specialty Pharmaceuticals with responsibility for incentive compensation design and payout administration. Marianne Nugent has joined the company as director, Publicis managed markets account teams operations. Nugent has been working in as a consultant for Publicis since December 2005 and her previous experience includes serving as a member of the operations/leadership team at Innovex and at Bristol-Myers Squibb as a VP. Lisa Montrone has been hired as senior director, project management and analytics. Prior, Montrone served as a consultant on large systems integration projects and later in information technology, sales operations and project management roles in the pharmaceutical industry. In addition, several internal promotions were announced including: Jim Zamichieli, who has been promoted to VP, IT. Elizabeth Siegel was promoted to the newly created position of associate recruiter. Sharon Sarge has been promoted to the position of senior HR specialist.
