Merck hired former CDC director Dr. Julie Gerberding to head its vaccines division. Gerberding served as director of the CDC from 2002 to 2009. As president of Merck Vaccines she is tasked with, among other things, accelerating efforts to broaden access to Merck vaccines in the developing world and working with R&D to manage the linkages between basic research, late-stage development and manufacturing.   

Eli Lilly promoted Derica Rice to EVP, global services and CFO, effective Jan. 1. He had been SVP and CFO. In the new role, Rice will retain his CFO duties and add responsibility for global services, including an ongoing global services design project, IT and Six Sigma.

HealthiNation hired Barbara Read and Odette Veneziano as senior director, media services. Read was director of sales at marketing technology company Bunchball, and Veneziano was VP, strategic sales, at OncologySTAT, a division of Elsevier.
