Generics manufacturer Mylan announced two executive promotions and one new hire. Heather Bresch, previously Mylan's chief operating officer, was promoted to president of the company. Rajiv Malik, formerly head of Mylan's global technical operations, was promoted to chief operating officer. Timothy Sawyer was hired as SVP, strategic corporate development, reporting to Bresch. Sawyer was previously EVP, global generic sales and marketing at Barr Laboratories, a Teva-owned company.

Contract sales firm PDI announced the appointment of Gerald Belle to the newly created position of lead independent director. Belle, a director at PDI since April 2008, is also chairman of the board at Myriad Pharmaceuticals, and a member of the board of directors at Myriad Genetics.

Roche-owned Genentech announced the appointment of Sandra Horning to SVP, global head, clinical development hematology/oncology. Horning will report to Hal Barron, EVP, global development and chief medical officer in the US, beginning in September. A tenured professor of medicine at Stanford University, Horning's responsibilities will include developing medical and scientific strategies for the global clinical development portfolio in oncology, leadership of the disease biology leadership team for oncology/hematology, and management of Genentech's team of oncology clinical scientists.

Merz Pharmaceuticals has added three new executives: Bill Edwards, VP, general counsel and chief compliance officer; Mikael Svensson, VP, medical and aesthetic services; and Dave Shoup, VP, neurology. Edwards was formerly an assistant general counsel at GSK. Shoup was VP of marketing at TPR/Talecris Biotherapeutics, and began his career at AstraZeneca. Svensson was previously VP at OrthoNeutrogena Aesthetics/ColBar LifeScience, a Johnson & Johnson subsidiary.

EKR Therapeutics, a specialty pharma, tapped Dave Iwanicki as SVP, corporate development, a newly created position. Iwanicki will report to EKR co-founder and CFO Richard DeSimone. Iwanicki has been with the company since early 2008.
