Raid at Novartis Tokyo

Allegations that drugmaker Novartis falsified data for its hypertension drug Diovan culminated in a police raid of its Tokyo offices Wednesday, reports the New York Times.

The country's health ministry filed a criminal complaint against Novartis in January over ads it says exaggerated the drug's impact. The Times noted Thursday that a guilty verdict could trigger a $20,000 fine and/or jail time. The Times also notes that two hospitals have stopped using the high blood pressure medication after universities retracted papers that said the drug helped prevent strokes.
