Patient-safety advocate Dr. Charles Denham will pay $1 million to settle kickback allegations brought by the Department of Justice, reported NPR. Denham did not admit wrongdoing, but the settlement does bar Denham from participating in Medicare and Medicaid programs.

Denham was accused of asking CareFusion Corp. for payments while he co-chaired the National Quality Forum committee in 2009 and 2010. The forum makes best-practices recommendations. NPR reported that Denham then encouraged the group to support CareFusion’s antiseptic ChloraPrep even though the group did not initially want to give it the OK. ProPublica previously reported that Denham had failed to disclose the CareFusion payments he received.

The DOJ said Denham’s payments triggered fraudulent claim requests to government programs.

“Denham had enjoyed star status in the patient safety world until January 2014, when the Justice Department first alleged an improper relationship involving his work with CareFusion. He was beloved by patient advocates,” NPR said.
