MediZine has acquired HealthStart, an independent custom healthcare program that integrates prescription drugs with relevant, consumer products for individuals managing lifestyle adjustments due to changes in their healthcare conditions. HealthStart, founded 10 years ago, delivers the compatible product combinations in a customized "Patient Starter Kit" directly to physicians. Consumers receive the kits during visits with their physicians. Pharmaceutical clients include Merck, Pfizer, Novo-Nordisk, Abbott Labs, Bristol-Myers Squibb and Ortho-McNeil. John Garett, the founder of HealthStart, will head the group as president. In a starter kit for Pravachol, Bristol-Myers Squibb's cholesterol drug, samples of Mrs. Dash and Molly McButter were included, along with coupons for Kashi cereal, eDiets, Everfresh juice and a Pravachol sample pack. The HealthStart program integrates prescription drugs with "functionally" healthy foods, products, services and educational literature into a single "healthy" starter package. Consumer packaged goods marketers reap the benefit of HealthStart by delivering their products directly into the hands of the consumer, while pharmaceutical companies now team up with consumer packaged goods for a unique added value opportunity for consumers.
