Medical journals must stay out of politics or risk fueling public distrust of the medical profession and the FDA, said Scott Gottlieb, the agency’s deputy commissioner for medical and scientific affairs.
Gottlieb told the American Medical Association House of Delegates that he is concerned that growing public distrust of the agency and medical institutions is feeding pressure for the FDA to impose risk management plans on new drugs–a practice that goes beyond the agency’s mandate, he said.
Gottlieb said journals should stick to promulgating practice standards rather than taking on politics.
