AstraZeneca tapped Simon Lowth, former finance chief at energy company Scottish Power, as its new chief financial officer, effective Nov. 5. Lowth replaces Jon Symonds, who abruptly announced in June that that he would leave AstraZeneca to join the investment bank Goldman Sachs Group.

Mesa Laboratories has named Glenn Adriance VP of sales and marketing. Adriance brings nearly 25 years of sales and marketing experience to Mesa. Much of that time was spent at IBM in increasingly more responsible roles within their field sales organization. Mesa Laboratories develops, acquires, manufactures and markets electronic instruments and disposables for industrial, pharmaceutical and medical applications.

Pacific Communications named Barry Bauling, PharmD, to the position of senior VP, director of client services, strategic communications, and the agency's medical education division. Bauling will take the lead in helping the agency integrate its medical and promotional work, with the goal of ensuring that products achieve their appropriate and optimal usage. Before joining Pacific Communications, Bauling was EVP for Innovative Medical Communications, Sherman Oaks, CA, where he was responsible for medical marketing activities, sales, and East Coast expansion. During his more than 30 years in the healthcare industry, he has also held key positions as President of Advanced Therapeutics Group, Saatchi & Saatchi, NY; EVP and director of client services, Sudler & Hennessey, NY; and SVP for Integrated Communications, NJ. Prior to his work in healthcare communications, he was clinical pharmacy director and director of inpatient pharmacy services at a community hospital in the Los Angeles area.
Frank Karkowsky has joined Haymarket Media as national account manager, for all Prescribing Reference titles, custom programs and digital initiatives. For the last 10 years, Karkowskysold promotional programs for the Physicians' Desk Reference, (PDR), a division of Thomson. Previously Karkowsky was an account manager on Drug Topics, a former Thomson property (now operated by Advanstar).
