Gilead Sciences has announced that Kevin Young CBE, executive vice president, commercial operations, has informed the company of his decision to retire, effective February 4. After his retirement, Young will continue to work directly with Gilead’s management team as a senior advisor. Young joined Gilead in 2004 to lead the company’s global commercial operations. During his tenure, he oversaw the launch of eight new therapies, including the first single tablet regimen for the treatment of HIV. In addition, Young has spent the last two years preparing Gilead for the introduction of an oral antiviral for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C. Young also managed expansion of Gilead’s operations in North America, Europe and Asia, including the establishment of new affiliate offices in Poland, Russia, South Korea and Japan.

Teva announced that Erez Vigodman (at left) has been appointed president and CEO, effective February 11. Vigodman will succeed acting President and CEO Eyal Desheh, who will return to his previous position as Group EVP and Chief Financial Officer of the company. Vigodman comes to Teva from the position of president and chief executive officer of Makhteshim Agan Industries (MAI), a generic agrochemical company.

Amgen has announced that Jonathan M. Peacock, executive vice president and chief financial officer, is leaving Amgen to pursue broader career opportunities.  Peacock stepped down from his role as CFO effective January 10, and is expected to remain employed with the company until May to assist with the transition. Michael A. Kelly, an 11-year Amgen veteran, has been named acting CFO of the company, reporting to Robert A. Bradway, chairman and chief executive officer.

Novartis announced today, that Hervé Hoppenot, president of Novartis Oncology, will leave Novartis with immediate effect having decided to pursue a career opportunity outside of the organization. Alessandro Riva, MD, global head, Novartis Oncology development and medical affairs, will take on the role of president of Novartis Oncology ad interim, in addition to his current role, until a successor is named in due course. Hervé has led the Oncology business since 2010.

Roche has appointed Sandra Horning as its new chief medical officer and head of global product development. Dr. Horning replaces previous CMO Hal Barron. Barron left the company in November to join Google biotech venture, Calico. Horning hails from Roche Oncology where she served as head of clinical development.

Esperion Therapeutics has announced the appointment of Antonio M. Gotto Jr., MD, DPhil as a director of the company. Gotto currently serves as co-chairman of the Board of Overseers of the Joan and Sanford I. Weill Medical College of Cornell University and vice president of Cornell University. From January 1997 to December 2011, Gotto served as the ­Stephen and Suzanne Weiss Dean of the Joan and Sanford I. Weill Medical College and Provost for Medical Affairs of Cornell University.


Diversified Agency Services announced the appointment of Ceci Zak (at left) as chief operating officer of DAS healthcare group of companies. A newly created role, Zak will lead the stewardship of DAS’s healthcare companies to identify and create strategic and operational opportunities that provide solutions for clients. She will report to John Doolittle, president and CFO of DAS. Most recently, Zak served as vice president of commercial capabilities at Sanofi, focusing on business innovation, digital excellence and learning & development. Over her eight years with Sanofi, Zak held a number of leadership positions including general management for the allergy portfolio, including the Allegra brand, as well as the hypertension and osteoporosis franchises, including Actonel and Avapro-Avalide. Prior to Sanofi, Zak held numerous commercial roles at Roche including franchise management, customer marketing brand director, market research, training and field sales/management.

DMW Direct, a leading direct response advertising agency, announced the appointment of Gina Kneib to EVP, COO and that Leslie Lawrence has joined its account services team as an account manager. Currently serving as EVP of Agency Operations, in her new role Kneib will focus on increased investments in people, process and technology. She will be responsible for overseeing DMW Direct’s technology, fulfillment, project management, privacy compliance and human resources functions. In the area of people, Kneib will lead candidate selection; development; performance; management; and succession planning. In the area of process, she will continue to evolve DMW Direct’s project management systems.  And in the area of technology, she will ensure that the agency offers a failsafe infrastructure. Lawrence’s background includes client and agency experience in the telecommunications, banking, credit card, publishing and pharmaceutical industries.  She served most recently as an account supervisor with Euro RSCG/Devon Direct. In her new role, Lawrence will contribute to a range of DMW Direct client accounts, specifically AmeriHealth Caritas and IBC.

CMI/Compas announced five new hires in the month of December. Erica Giering has been named to the position of account coordinator and will be working with the buying services & deliverables team. Jim Halter is now the company’s developer (.Net). Halter will develop web-based programming tools, graphic design, and database administration for the company. Matthew Howell has been named senior search analyst. Howell will work with the company’s SEO clients/processes. Ami Patel as media planner and Darren Martino as senior media planner will work with the company’s media teams to support business.

Emron has announced the hiring of Edward J. Heinz as General Manager. Heinz has over 30 years of experience in the pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical and managed markets industries. Most recently, Heinz was president and owner of HeinzSight, a medical com­munications consultancy specializing in clinical and managed care publishing and education programs. Previously, he worked in various executive positions directly within the health care marketing services industry as well as the pharmaceutical industry. Heinz holds a BA in Biology from Tusculum College.

Javelin Marketing Group has  announced the promotion of David Anders (at left) to managing director of Javelin West, based in Seattle. Anders will also retain his previous role as vice president, client services. Anders joined Javelin in Seattle in May 2011. He was formerly the global lead for Microsoft’s consumer brands at Wunderman, where he created integrated digital campaigns for Microsoft’s Online Services and Interactive Entertainment brands including Xbox, Bing, Windows Live, MSN and others. He earned an undergraduate degree in journalism from Texas Christian University and holds an MBA in management.

Rx EDGE Pharmacy Networks has announced the promotions of Rob Blazek to vice president—network strategies and Tracie Young to vice president—finance. Blazek, a registered pharmacist, was previously the company’s director of network strategies and business development. Prior to joining Rx EDGE Pharmacy Networks, he was with CVS, where he served as manager of patient intervention programs.  Young, formerly senior director of finance, leads the company’s finance and human resources departments and previously held financial and accounting positions in public accounting firms as well as in the telecommunications industry.  

Klick Health has announced the addition of three new members to its strategy and client services team: Heather Mendenhall-­Danby, James Pietz, and Michael Spitz. Pietz joins Klick’s Philadelphia team after having held senior client management and strategy positions at Digitas Health, MicroMass Communications and imc2. Over the years, Pietz has been responsible for the accounts of top healthcare and pharmaceutical clients, including Novartis, Lilly, P&G Consumer Health & Pharmaceuticals, Shire, Novo Nordisk, UCB, the American Diabetes Association, Galderma Labs, Mylan, Abbott and GSK. Spitz  joins the Klick team in New York. Prior to Klick, Spitz held senior strategic posts at global and national agencies, including Edelman and inVentiv Communications. In addition, he ran the Health and Life Sciences division at Zemoga. Mendenhall-Danby comes on as a member of Klick’s Chicago team after working at Intouch Solutions where she focused on digital integrated marketing for clients in the pharmaceutical space. Mendenhall-Danby has also helped a wide range of ­clients, including AbbVie, SPRINT, Coca Cola, USPS, Kraft Foods and Kellogg’s, with their online and offline brand footprints.
