An FDA-approved app called Triton Fluid Management may help medical teams more accurately assess blood lost during surgery. Gizmodo reports that the app works by taking snapshots of blood-soaked cloths, and that the app uses an algorithm to convert the visuals into a blood-loss estimate. The app could replace the current estimation system, which relies on weighing sponges to determine fluid loss.

Gizmodo notes that the app isn’t foolproof because “it can’t keep track of every single drop of blood lost in the operating room.”
