The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) has canceled its annual conference due to the coronavirus.

The conference was supposed to begin March 9 in Orlando, Florida. Conference organizers said in a statement that, after coordinating with an external advisory panel of medical professionals, “it is clear that it would be an unacceptable risk to bring so many thousands of people together in Orlando next week.” Organizers also based the decision on information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

Earlier this week, several companies pulled out of attending HIMSS, including Amazon, Intel, Cisco and Salesforce.

Organizers said in a statement that this is the first time in 58 years the conference has been canceled. More than 40,000 people attended the conference in 2019.
