Former Edelman U.S. client lead Chaz Cox has joined M Booth Health as managing director, marketing communications.

He will be responsible for brand and patient communications at the Next Fifteen agency, including the release of client products and disease awareness. He reports to CEO Stacey Bernstein.

“Marketing communications for us is really about brand communications and patient advocacy,” he said.

Cox leads a team of around 30 and started Monday. The role was vacant for three to four months prior to his arrival, according to Bernstein. He sits alongside 18 others on M Booth Health’s leadership team.

He previously worked at Edelman for over four years, most recently serving as U.S. client lead overseeing scientific and regulatory communications, patient programming and crisis management.

His hiring supplements M Booth Health’s hire of Tayla Mahmud as EVP, health equity and multicultural communications, a newly created role she began in March.

Mahmud also sits on the firm’s leadership team and reports to Bernstein.

She aims to improve health equity and address health disparities in underserved communities.

“That’s opening up our creative processes and digital execution and asking questions,” she said. “Who are we leaving behind?”

She added that M Booth Health created her position to address “one-size-fits-all approaches” seen at big firms, which ultimately don’t focus enough on communities underserved in healthcare.

Mahmud previously worked at Havas Health & You as associate managing director for over two years.

Bernstein said M Booth Health brought on Cox and Mahmud to inject health equity in different facets of communications, including marketing, within the firm.

“We all came from very large agencies,” Bernstein said. “And we intentionally came here because we saw a unique opportunity to do things differently.”

M Booth Health previously hired Peter Matheson Gay as its first chief impact officer in March.

M Booth Health reported revenue growth to $16.3 million in 2021 compared to around $14.4 million in 2020, according to PRWeek’s Agency Business Report 2022. Staff grew to 67 from 51 across the same period.
