For its first digital issue, Verywell Health has turned its focus to preventative health.
Verywell’s Preventive Health Issue, set to debut today, is devoted to encouraging people to invest in their health before chronic conditions develop. “Queer Eye” star Jonathan Van Ness serves as its cover star.
Dotdash Meredith SVP and group general manager, health Sara Michael said that the decision to focus on preventative health was prompted by the unfortunate trend of people avoiding screenings and doctor visits during the pandemic.
“Over the last few years, we saw that a lot of people were neglecting regular annual screenings and checkups, which can lead to poorer health outcomes in the long-term,” Michael explained. “The goal is to educate people around preventive health and get them back into their provider’s offices.”
Van Ness, a longtime advocate for the LGBTQ+ community on issues related to HIV, is featured in both photos and an interview.
“We chose him because of his advocacy for life-saving care, particularly for the LGBTQ+ community,” Michael said. “He’s been an outspoken ally for people living with HIV, including himself, and has talked a lot about embracing healthy living and taking control of his health. He was a perfect fit.”
The digital issue will include sections like “Getting Back on Track,” which encourages people to maintain regular screenings, medication adherence and oral health care. Q&As will feature a general practitioner, dentist and dermatologist the most important types of screenings and preventive care measures.
“Doing a digital issue has been exciting for us because we’ve focused so much of our strategy on being a service content health site,” Michael said. “This is different for us and is a cool way to showcase content and visuals around a certain theme, as well as provide something that’s immersive for our users around an important topic.”
