Novartis plans to buy drugmaker Medicines Company for $9.7 billion. Medicines Company is focused on cholesterol drugs and has about a dozen of these drugs in development. Novartis’ own heart drug, Entresto, has missed sales expectations. (Wall Street Journal)

PhRMA is ending funding for addiction treatment group Addiction Policy Forum. The industry group has provided about 90% of the nonprofit’s funding in recent years and plans to stop donating in 2020. (Politico)

Global Blood Therapeutics’ drug, Oxbryta, has won approval to treat sickle cell disease. The drug works to treat the underlying cause of the disease by preventing sickle cells from deforming. Novartis’ sickle cell drug, Adakveo, was also recently approved. (Reuters)

The Food and Drug Administration has declined Adamis opioid overdose treatment. The FDA sent a complete response letter to the company, asking for more information about the drug’s chemistry, manufacturing and controls process. (Reuters)
