A variation in the so-called spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 has led to a new, more infectious form of COVID-19. As it now accounts for 98% of all COVID cases, scientists want to know if this new form is deadlier than the previously sequenced form of the virus from China. Marc Iskowitz, MM&M’s executive editor, speaks with microbiologist and genomic engineer Dr. Neville Sanjana about his lab’s recent findings on the spike mutation and how COVID has accelerated the speed of science.
