GlaxoSmithKline will slash up to 4,000 sales jobs, mostly in the US and Europe, according to newspaper reports. The cuts come as GSK seeks to shift resources away from established markets, where growth is cooling, to emerging ones.

New York governor David Paterson proposed a ban on most gifts to physicians as part of his state budget. Paterson’s plan wouldn’t ban lunch ‘n’ learns, but would prohibit tchotchkes, flowers, tickets to sports events and other goodies, with fines per violation.

Merck EVP and president, global human health Ken Frazier said Merck completed an overhaul of its commercial organization in January. “Our US sales force is now fully operational and completely focused on meeting customer needs,” said Frazier. Don’t get too comfortable, though, Merck reps—the company plans to reduce headcount by 15,000 as it absorbs the Schering-Plough merger.
