Healthgrades released its annual list of the best hospitals in America on Tuesday.

In addition to its top 250 hospitals across the country, the health information company also issued the state rankings for the top care facilities of 2024. The report’s methodology evaluated around 4,500 hospitals on key metrics centered on patient outcomes across more than 30 procedures and conditions.

These included mortality-based procedures and conditions like heart attacks, sepsis and upper gastrointestinal surgeries as well as in-hospital complications-based procedures and conditions like spinal fusions, hip fracture treatment and gallbladder removal surgeries.

The company stated that the 250 hospitals across the country on this list are in the top 5% of overall clinical excellence. Healthgrades added that it analyzed hospitals in 18 specialty areas in order to name the highest-ranking hospitals in 32 eligible states.

While making the top 250 is an honor, being named to the best 50 hospitals in America is rarified air.

Among the top 50, several noteworthy facilities yet again returned to the list, including Cedars – Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, Lenox Hill Hospital in New York, Houston Methodist Hospital in Texas and the University Of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City.

For both Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix and Lancaster General Hospital in Pennsylvania, 2024 marked its 22nd consecutive year on the top 250 hospital list.

Conversely, a few hospitals made their debut in the top 50, like Wellspan Chambersburg Hospital, Summa Health System – Akron Campus, Adventhealth Orlando and Mayo Clinic Health System Mankato.

Healthgrades commended the provider organizations included on its list and reiterated the impact quality of care can have on patients and the healthcare system overall, estimating that if all hospitals in the U.S. performed similarly to the top 250 hospitals, nearly 179,000 lives could have been saved.

“Hospital quality is a crucial, yet often overlooked, factor to consider when choosing a doctor,” Brad Bowman, MD, chief medical officer and head of data science at Healthgrades, said in a statement. “Healthgrades is dedicated to taking the guesswork out of the equation by providing consumers  with a reliable, data-driven platform to identify reputable hospitals in their area. We want to give patients the confidence they’re choosing the highest quality healthcare.”
