A New York State database to keep painkiller prescriptions in check appears to be working. The Associated Press reports that doctors have checked the almost six-month-old database seven million times to see a patient’s prescribing history.
The limit: five prescribers, five pharmacies in three months.
State law requires doctors, nurse practitioners and PAs to check the database before prescribing pain medications, and the state health commissioner says it has reduced “doctor shopping” by 75%.
