The FDA has approved a new vaccine against smallpox which could be quickly made if the virtually extinct virus were to reappear.
The vaccine, ACAM2000 is made by Acambis of Cambridge, England and Cambridge, MA. It is intended to inoculate those at high risk of exposure to smallpox and could be used to protect individuals and populations during a bioterrorist attack.
The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has already stockpiled 192.5 million doses of the vaccine.
