A Dream Delivered: The Lost Letters of Hawkins Wilson

Many Americans don’t fully understand the generational impact of slavery. A powerful example: the story of Hawkins Wilson, who was born into slavery, separated from his family as a young boy and eventually emancipated. Resilient in the face of loss, Wilson wrote letters to the newly formed Freedmen’s Bureau in hopes of reuniting with his loved ones — but they were never delivered.

Ancestry.com wanted to change that. Using its genealogical tools and historical records, the company facilitated the delivery of Wilson’s lost letters to his modern-day descendants, a process captured in the documentary A Dream Delivered: The Lost Letters of Hawkins Wilson. Hosted by former black-ish star Anthony Anderson, the film explores slavery’s continued impact on families.
