The COVID-19 pandemic is teaching the rest of the world what we in our industry have long known: Creativity is a critically important tool in health-related communications. It is all too easy to fall back on soft, cliché-ridden thinking in a time like this, so it’s worth taking a moment to celebrate the creatives who used this challenging time to inspire compassion, connection and change.

Greetings from Lockdown, FCB Chicago

During lockdown, we feel a sense of solitude and despair. But there’s beauty to be found in knowing that we were all going through it together. A pair of creatives from FCB Chicago tapped into this to create a series of travel-themed postcard images that helps reframe how we see our homes under quarantine. People from all over the world joined in the effort on Twitter, creating a beautiful moment of connection in a time of intense isolation.

Let’s Not Go Back to Normal, Havas London

One would hope that this drastic change to the ways we live our lives would lead us to question many of the things we considered “normal” before the pandemic. Sexual health is an area in dire need of this sort of reassessment. The Let’s Not Go Back To Normal campaign presents us with a stirring call to question some of the very faulty logic that has led to some horrible health outcomes.

We’ve all seen so many HCP-as-hero ads (and we’ve probably done a few ourselves), but I doubt we’ve executed them with the freshness, simplicity and compassion represented in this poster series. They’ve taken a real truth — that healthcare professionals are the true heroes of this crisis — and brought it to life in a remarkable way.

Asking people to transform the way they live by practicing social distancing and staying home is no small task. Developed for the United Nations, this location-specific digital campaign portrays famous landmarks that are not in their normal locations because they are home, bringing a sense of connection and national collaboration to this drastic call for change.

Healthcare workers have put themselves at immense risk by being on the front lines of this pandemic. Beyond the very real and immediate fear of being infected with COVID-19, this crisis is having a profound impact on their mental health. This video-based campaign done for a UK charity is a remarkably honest and compassionate look at this challenging reality.

This clever piece of art direction reminds us that the most profound changes start with small, individual action. In this case, the simple act of staying home and reading can make a world of difference as we fight this pandemic.
