Gilead promoted Gregg Alton to EVP, corporate and medical affairs. Alton was previously SVP and general counsel, and will continue to report to John Martin, Gilead’s chairman and CEO.

Margaret McGlynn, president of Merck‘s vaccine and infectious disease unit, announced plans to retire on November 1, according to several press reports. No successor has been named.

Medtronic announced the appointment of Cameron Findlay to senior vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary, effective August 24. Findlay will oversee Medtronic’s legal function and government affairs department, and serve as a member of Medtronic’s executive committee. Findlay will report to Bill Hawkins, Medtronic’s chairman and CEO.

McCann Healthcare Worldwide named Charlie Buckwell worldwide head of medical communications. Bucknell, who has headed McCann’s Complete Medical Group for five years, assumes responsibility for the rest of the network’s global med ed business, including Caudex Medical. He reports to McCann Healthcare Worldwide CEO Richard Nordstrom and is joined by Phill Sutcliffe, who becomes CFO, global medical communications and EMEA healthcare. Sutcliffe previously served as CFO for Complete Medical Group and Caudex Medical.

GVK Biosciences, an India-based contract research organization, added ex-Lilly EVP Gerhard Mayr to its board of directors. Mayr sits on the board at several other organizations, including UCB. He is also a past chairman of the International Executive Committee and the Europe Committee of PhRMA.
