The Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) announced a public call for comment about its proposal to simplify the accreditation requirements and process.
The announcement was made earlier this month, following release of the proposal for informal feedback last May. The call for public comment is the next step in the process.
Changes suggested are for the “core” criteria (1-15) and promise to do a great deal to streamline them and eliminate redundancy. Comments will be accepted through Jan. 31, 2014.
However, the accreditor is not asking for comments on revising the requirements for Accreditation with Commendation at this time, an area where it received a good amount of initial feedback.
“The ACCME is in the process of developing a menu of potential new commendation criteria and will share those ideas with the stakeholder community at a later time,” it said. “The ACCME decided to separate the simplification proposal from the Accreditation with Commendation proposal in order to expedite the simplification process, in response to stakeholders’ requests.”
About a third of all providers are achieving Accreditation with Commendation, and many believe the criteria need to be more challenging. There is debate is on what exactly should be required, though.
