LionsHealth’s final afternoon began with perspective from Taiwan’s HCPR, with a focus on empowering, rather than frightening patients, in order to encourage people to take positive action for their health.
Mai Chang of the Taiwanese Association of Diabetes Educators illustrated how peer-to-peer contact after diagnoses helped a young woman overcome her fears of her Type 1 diagnosis. Jason Chang of HCPR told a story of a man diagnosed with colon cancer, who connected with fellow patients at a health educational event focused on fun and soccer.
David Szu, board member of the Hope Foundation for Cancer Care in Taiwan, took the message further with the story of losing his sister to cervical cancer when she was 34. She had never had a pap smear and Szu committed himself to educating women on being tested. His personal testimony was a reminder of the power of real stories.
