William Hamman, a pilot who claimed to be a cardiologist, received millions in research fees, grants and salaries over 15 years before a routine background check revealed he is not even a doctor, the AP reported.
The 58-year-old Hamman, who was in fact a United Airlines captain, served as an educator and researcher at William Beaumont Hospital. The American College of Cardiology gave him a $250,000 contract in order to teach doctors about teamwork and patient safety based on his years as a commercial aviator.
ACCME executive director Dr. Murray Kopelow was quoted as saying the council would not revoke credits earned by doctors who attended Hamman’s sessions.
