While some people mock Walmart for its ubiquity and soup-to-nuts selling approach, there is much to be said for the convenience of one-stop shopping. Dr. John Wigneswaran is putting that consumer equity to good use, especially in attempting to eliminate so-called health deserts. On the MM+M podcast earlier this year, Wigneswaran — known in the industry as Dr. Wig — noted that of Walmart’s 5,000 pharmacies, around 4,000 are located in underserved areas. He also outlined what that means for helping patients get the care they need: “The touchpoint with a pharmacist is really, really critical and so the education that occurs at the counter is important. The other thing that we also take pretty seriously is that every moment in which we encounter someone is an opportunity to either change their understanding of their medication or to build trust and health literacy,” he said.
