Havas Health & You (HH&Y) and the American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA) announced the launch of the ParkinSex wellness campaign Thursday morning.

The goal of the effort is to support people living with Parkinson’s disease by offering nonclinical strategies. ParkinSex serves as a guide to intimacy for people living with the disease as well as their partners to “deepen their connections and improve sexual wellness.”

Parkinson’s is a neurodegenerative disease that affects the central nervous system and is best known for causing body tremors, difficulty moving and stiffness in limbs. Approximately 500,000 Americans are diagnosed with Parkinson’s, according to the National Institutes of Health

HH&Y sponsored the pilot distribution of the wellness kits to people living with Parkinson’s, which include an edutical guide as well as other items like massage stones, candles and coupons for adaptive clothing.

The agency said the kits, which seek to raise awareness of the benefits related to sexual intimacy for people living with the disease, sold out in 24 hours.

“APDA recognized a void within the community discussing these sensitive, yet important issues, and they acted. They embraced the conversation around sexual wellness and propelled it forward without fear,” Allison Ceraso, president and chief creative officer of Havas Health Plus, said in a statement. “It’s been an honor collaborating with them, the many members of their PD community, and with the support of Dr Sheila Silver, clinical sexologist. Co-creating the content for ParkinSex helped make it accessible and inclusive, in both the physical and emotional sense.”

For its part, the APDA acknowledged that sexual intimacy can play a significant role in a person’s life, which can make living with Parkinson’s disease all that more challenging for patients.

“This is why we created The ParkinSex Booklet & Kit, to help people with PD rekindle that special connection and find ways to revive intimacy in new ways,” APDA CEO Leslie A. Chambers said in a statement.

HH&Y announced the ParkinSex effort weeks after finalizing a strategic partnership with Trinity Life Sciences, a healthcare-focused consulting firm, at the J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference.

In addition to ParkinSex, HH&Y teamed with H4B Boston and Beyond the Diagnosis to promote ads supporting Rare Disease Day in Times Square. The agency said several artists worked pro bono to create these artistic designs.

The portraits of children with rare diseases are part of the #RareInTimesSquare effort and can be found on the corner of 1500 Broadway and West 43rd street.
