Now in its 19th printed edition, The Merck Manual, published as a not-for profit service by the global pharma company of the same name, has been updated to include an on-the-go accompaniment for its technologically savvy physician users in the form of a free app. According to the company, the latest version of the Manual reflects advancements in both medicine and technology to deliver information to HCPs via both print and electronic displays.
The Merck Manual app, which runs on a physican-friendly Skyscape Mobile platform, is currently available for BlackBerry, Android, iPhone and Windows Mobile. Incorporated into the app are interactive flowcharts to help physicians with their clinical decision-making processes, and the ability to link clinical information found in The Merck Manual to relevant information in other Skyscape medical resources—treatment guidelines, journal summaries and drug and lab guides, for instance—courtesy of the medical mobile carrier’s smARTlink technology.
For the more traditional physician, the print version of the Manual, which has been translated into 17 languages, with more than 10 million copies sold worldwide, encompasses nearly 4,000 pages, with contributions from more than 300 HCPs— all experts in their respective fields, which highlight psychiatry, gynecology, pharmacology and pediatrics, to name a few. This edition is organized with a detailed index, thumb tabs, and page-specific cross references which aim to ease a HCPs search for information by specialty.
Original information in the print Manual‘s newest edition includes a more efficient geriatrics section, containing discussion on the prevention of disease in the elderly, a 16-page insert displaying eye, skin, oral and other disorders, an appendix which lists Normal Laboratory Values with summaries of diagnoses and treatments, and a chapter about healthcare-related financial issues.
