As administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services under the Biden administration, Chiquita Brooks-LaSure has led the agency through historic drug-pricing reform. Before that, she was a pivotal figure in the passage and implementation of the Affordable Care Act. Not surprisingly, then, much of her influence is linked to the continuing push to reduce drug costs. In the last year, CMS has begun implementing the pricing reform outlined by the Inflation Reduction Act, including the selection of the first 10 drugs eligible for Medicare negotiation. Brooks-LaSure has stated that the goal of these negotiations is to “improve access to some of the costliest drugs for millions of people with Medicare.” Her efforts will have ripple effects on pharma and healthcare for years to come.
