Anxiety, depression and suicide rates have continued to rise in recent years, rendering mental health care a critical part of healthcare writ large. It’s fair to say that no Surgeon General in the country’s history has attempted to reverse the country’s lack of emphasis on such care as Dr. Vivek Murthy has in his three years in the role. In 2021, he declared an official mental health crisis among young people in the U.S. Since then, he has worked to highlight challenges around effective mental health treatment, led conversations around the negative impact of social media and identified isolation and loneliness as public health threats. He’s done so in an uncommonly personal manner, referencing his own struggles with isolation and mental health.
