The COVID-19 pandemic placed a renewed focus on clinical trials, highlighting numerous shortcomings around the diversity of participants. In its wake, many companies have attempted to address vulnerabilities and biases that have plagued clinical trial work for years. One surprise contributor has been Walgreens, whose efforts have been led by Ramita Tandon. The organization used to position itself at “the corner of happy and healthy” — but under Tandon’s leadership, it has embraced a range of opportunities in the clinical research sphere. One obstacle preventing patients from enrolling in trials is transportation to the research site; enter Walgreens and its thousands of brick-and-mortar locations. It’s a savvy, worthy effort, and Tandon clearly has the will to see it through.
