Abbott is increasing its investment and presence in the adult nutrition drink space.

The healthcare giant debuted the Protality brand of high-protein nutrition shakes Wednesday morning.

The Protality shake is launching in milk chocolate and vanilla flavors available in 11-ounce, four-pack units. Protality is the latest addition to Abbott’s line of adult nutrition products, which includes Ensure and Glucerna.

Abbott added that Protality’s formulation is equivalent to the nutrition in the Ensure Max Protein drink.

The protein shakes are available at the websites of major retailers like Amazon, Walmart and Kroger, with a larger rollout planned for brick and mortar stores nationwide throughout the next few months.

Protality debuts as interest in weight loss has spiked across the country, which the company references frequently in a press release touting the product launch.

Abbott notes that the rise of GLP-1 drugs have influenced millions of Americans to further pursue their weight loss options. However, the company added that weight loss can contribute to muscle loss, which Protality seeks to mitigate with its high-protein ingredients as well as fast- and slow-digesting formulation.

”It’s critical for adults on weight loss regimens to prioritize good nutrition to ensure they get enough micronutrients and protein to preserve muscle mass while consuming limited calories,” said Hakim Bouzamondo, MD, MSC, MBA, division VP of nutrition research and development at Abbott, in a statement. ”We’ve studied muscle health and nutrition for decades at Abbott. We understand that a weight loss journey can be challenging, which is why we’re launching the Protality brand to give adults nutritional products with an excellent source of high-quality protein and nutrients to support muscle health.”

The company unveiled the protein shake brand one week after releasing its latest quarterly earnings report, which was a mixed bag of results.
