The number of ACCME-accredited and state or territorial medical society accredited CME providers fell a respective 9% and 18% the last five years.

As of March, there were 687 ACCME-accredited providers and 1,371 providers accredited by ACCME-recognized accreditors. In 2007, there were 751 ACCME-accredited providers and 1,662 providers accredited by state or territorial medical societies. ACCME reported the data in an executive summary of its March board meeting.

Provider attrition rates can be attributed to factors that include the decline in commercial support, as well as higher fees and tougher policies for maintaining accreditation.
