MD talks gift ban, CME measures

Maryland lawmakers are weighing a conflict-of-interest bill that impacts commercially supported CME.
HB 818 would limit industry payments for certified CME programs to seminars that feature more than one presenter. At a hearing, Julie Gottlieb, associate dean of policy coordination for John Hopkins Medical School, asked for this provision to be modified, since CME events can feature a single presenter.
Also, language barring promotion of specific Rx products and marketing activities within CME programs could be interpreted so broadly as to eliminate the ability of HCPs to say that a class of drugs is recommended, Gottlieb warned lawmakers.
